Many people are able to overcome habitual behaviors
without therapy. Some smokers quit cold turkey
with little help, while others require various
aids to assist them during the earlier phase of
recovery.
Many
people who visit a therapist to overcome negative
habits begin relapsing shortly after therapy
due to lack of ongoing support. As well, many
individuals who walk through a therapist’s
door need coaching rather than long-term therapy
to overcome negative habits. Therapy is necessary
when deep emotional pain is attached to habitual
behaviors or mental illness is diagnosed.
It is difficult to overcome long-held habits.
Yet, with determination, focus, and new skills
development, it is not impossible. Negatives
habits are most often formed unconsciously over
a matter of years; and negative habits are usually
maladaptive coping skills that keep an individual
from living a happy, successful life.
One client told me, “Ron, after 8 months
of working with you, I don’t feel any
different as a person than when I began. Yet,
I have begun to think differently about myself;
I’m responding differently to my stressors;
and I’m overcoming my addiction as I get
to respond more positively to my needs.”
While not feeling any different, he is experiencing
himself in a healthier way, becoming more aware
of his thinking and choices of behavior.
Change is a journey, it is not a sprint to
the goal line. While change takes place slowly,
it actually takes less time to make the change
than it did to develop the negative habit (when
you consider the years it took for you to develop
it).
Together, we work on a holistic approach to
the way your life is managed. Developing a body,
mind, and spirit process – a holistic
exploration into the reason you have adopted
the negative behavior – we begin to see
how other behaviors support the belief and thinking
behind the negative behavior.
Over time you begin to bring about changes
that have a more positive effect on your life.
You begin to act differently, developing positive
behaviors that allow you to live more authentically.
